I expect to pass through this world but once

When the Himalayan peasant meets the he-bear in his pride

Move him into the sun

Monday's child is fair of face

I met a traveller from an antique land

When I was a child

What a piece of work is a man!

I wish I loved the Human Race

At Tara today in this fateful hour

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?

Tikki Tikki Tembo

A Chinese Folk Tale---Retold by S.E. Schlosser

Once there lived a family in ancient China that had two sons. The elder son, who was to inherit the family fortune, was given a very-long and very-impressive name, as befitted an elder son. He was called Tikki Tikki Tembo No Sarembo Hari Kari Pi Chi Pip Peri Pembo. The second son, who would have to make his own way in the world and was therefore not so important, though no less beloved, was named Ping.

The two brothers were good friends, and loved to play games with one another. One day, as they were playing tag, little Ping slipped on some wet grass and fell into the river.
Tikki Tikki Tembo No Sarembo Hari Kari Pi Chi Pip Peri Pembo was alarmed. Neither of the brothers knew how to swim.

Tikki Tikki Tembo No Sarembo Hari Kari Pi Chi Pip Peri Pembo ran swiftly toward the house shouting: “Mother! Mother! Ping has fallen into the river!”
Alarmed, Mother cried: “Ping has fallen into the river! We must tell your father!”
So Tikki Tikki Tembo No Sarembo Hari Kari Pi Chi Pip Peri Pembo and his Mother ran out into the farm yard to look for Father. They found him tending the horse.

“Father! Father! Ping has fallen into the river,” shouted Tikki Tikki Tembo No Sarembo Hari Kari Pi Chi Pip Peri Pembo and his Mother.
“Ping has fallen into the river?” Father cried in alarm. “We must borrow our Neighbor’s boat and rescue him!”

Tikki Tikki Tembo No Sarembo Hari Kari Pi Chi Pip Peri Pembo, his Mother and his Father ran to the neighbor’s house.
“Neighbor, Ping has fallen into the river! May we borrow your boat?” asked Father.
“Ping has fallen into the river?” exclaimed the Neighbor. “How terrible. Of course you may borrow my boat.”

So Father and Mother and Tikki Tikki Tembo No Sarembo Hari Kari Pi Chi Pip Peri Pembo paddled out into the river and rescued poor Ping, who was nearly drowned.
A few weeks later, Tikki Tikki Tembo No Sarembo Hari Kari Pi Chi Pip Peri Pembo and Ping were fetching water from the well when Tikki Tikki Tembo No Sarembo Hari Kari Pi Chi Pip Peri Pembo leaned over too far and fell into the well.

Ping was alarmed. Neither of the brothers knew how to swim.
Ping ran up to the house, shouting: “Mother! Mother! Tikki Tikki Tembo No Sarembo Hari Kari Pi Chi Pip Peri Pembo has fallen into the well!”
Alarmed, Mother cried: “Tikki Tikki Tembo No Sarembo Hari Kari Pi Chi Pip Peri Pembo has fallen into the well! We must find your father!”

Ping and his Mother ran out into the yard to look for Father. They found him in his workshop, carving a table for the kitchen.
“Father! Father! Tikki Tikki Tembo No Sarembo Hari Kari Pi Chi Pip Peri Pembo has fallen into the well,” shouted Ping and his Mother.

“Tikki Tikki Tembo No Sarembo Hari Kari Pi Chi Pip Peri Pembo has fallen into the well?” Father cried in alarm. “We must borrow a ladder from the Gardener and rescue him!”
Ping, his Mother and his Father ran to the gardener’s house. “Tikki Tikki Tembo No Sarembo Hari Kari Pi Chi Pip Peri Pembo has fallen into the well,” they told the Gardener. “We need to borrow your ladder.”

“Tikki Tikki Tembo No Sarembo Hari Kari Pi Chi Pip Peri Pembo has fallen into the well?” the Gardener exclaimed. “How terrible. Of course you may borrow my ladder.”
So Father took the ladder and climbed down the well to rescue Tikki Tikki Tembo No Sarembo Hari Kari Pi Chi Pip Peri Pembo.
But it took so long for everyone to say the poor boy’s name that Father arrived too late. Tikki Tikki Tembo No Sarembo Hari Kari Pi Chi Pip Peri Pembo had drowned.
Ever since that day, the people of China have given their children very short names.

News#2: Baby Blues

Next link has information. Please, click on it:

Good evening, and welcome to the ten o'clock news. Tonight's top story:

A baby has been found abandoned at a local hospital. Porters found the baby girl, who is thought to be only a few days old, at 2 o'clock this morning. Police are appealing for the baby's mother to come forward. Meanwhile, the baby is being well cared for by hospital staff and she is said to be doing well.

Three people have been injured after an explosion at a car warehouse in the city. The cause of the explosion is not yet known, but police are investigating. It is thought that some chemicals were left in the open instead of being locked away. Workers at the warehouse were said to be relieved that the explosion had only been minor and that noone had been seriously injured or killed.

Local schools are campaining for school hours to be altered. Students and staff are writing to the Prime Minister to campaign for schools to start, and finish, earlier. It is not yet known if their campaign has been successful, but if so, schools will begin at 8 am instead of 9 am, and finish at 2.30 pm, leaving students and staff with more time after school.
A play in the city which is said to be a parody of modern theatre begins tonight. The play, which features famous singers, dancers, actors and musicians from across the country is set to be a real hit, so get your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment!

Finally, a pigeon has broken the world record for the longest known pigeon flight. The bird was released by its owner in Bali, Indonesia 31 days ago. It flew back to its home on the Scottish island of Arran, a total of 8143 miles, arriving yesterday morning. The bird's owner, Angus McMurphy, was said to be 'delighted'.

And now for the weather: Tomorrow is set to be rainy, with light spells of sunshine towards midday. Temperatures are expected to remain below 10 degrees, with a maximum of 11 in the South East. On Tuesday things will be brighter, with temperatures of 20 degrees, so get your summer clothes out! Unfortunately for you hayfever sufferers, the pollen count is high for this week.

And that's all for tonight's news. Thank you for watching. See you tomorrow.

What is DRTA?

Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA)

The Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) is a comprehension strategy that guides students in asking questions about a text, making predictions, and then reading to confirm or refute their predictions. The DRTA process encourages students to be active and thoughtful readers, enhancing their comprehension.
Why use directed reading thinking activity?
·       It encourages students to be active and
·       thoughtful readers.
·       It activates students' prior knowledge.
·       It teaches students to monitor their understanding of the text as they're reading.
·       It helps strengthen reading and critical thinking skills.
How to use directed reading thinking activity
Teachers should follow the steps below when creating a DRTA.
1.    Determine the text to be used and pre-select points for students to pause during the reading process.
2.    Introduce the text, the purpose of the DRTA, and provide examples of how to make predictions.
Note: Be aware of the reading levels of each student, and be prepared to provide appropriate questions, prompts, and support as needed.
3.    Use the following outline to guide the procedure:
D = DIRECT. Teachers direct and activate students' thinking prior to reading a passage by scanning the title, chapter headings, illustrations, and other materials. Teachers should use open-ended questions to direct students as they make predictions about the content or perspective of the text (e.g., "Given this title, what do you think the passage will be about?").
R = READING. Students read up to the first pre-selected stopping point. The teacher then prompts the students with questions about specific information and asks them to evaluate their predictions and refine them if necessary. This process should be continued until students have read each section of the passage.
T = THINKING. At the end of each section, students go back through the text and think about their predictions. Students should verify or modify their predictions by finding supporting statements in the text. The teacher asks questions such as:
·       What do you think about your predictions now?
·       What did you find in the text to prove your predictions?

·       What did you we read in the text that made you change your predictions?
